A 1992 graduate of the United States Military Academy and a retired lieutenant colonel, Dr. Cleveland draws upon twenty-eight years of leadership experience in the United States Army and over sixteen years in a number of different capacities in higher education.
He has served as an academic success coach in a PAC-12 intercollegiate athletics department, working primarily with high-profile student-athletes, as an instructor and advisor in an innovative alternative admissions program at a Big-12 university, and as both a junior and senior rotating faculty member at West Point. He also served as the Associate Director of the Academy's Mounger Writing Center and Writing Fellows Program and was instrumental in establishing the West Point Writing Program.
After retiring from active duty, Dr. Cleveland accepted a dual appointment at The Citadel in Charleston, SC, serving as a Visiting Assistant Professor in its Department of English, Fine Arts, and Communication and as the Assistant Director of the college's Center for Excellence and Innovation in Teaching and Learning and Distance Education.
Throughout his career in academia, he has worked extensively to develop students and professors both inside and outside the classroom. Equally comfortable – and successful – working with Service Academy and ROTC scholarship cadets, student-athletes, academic superstars, and first-generation and non-traditional students, he focuses on deliberate planning, establishing and achieving specific outcomes and objectives, and developing “the whole person” for sustained personal, academic, and professional success.
